A russian ballistic missile struck the industrial site of our steel company Metinvest in the city of Zaporizhzhia during the night of 10-11 August 2026. Seven employees of the Zaporizhstal team were killed and 21 were injured as they moved towards a shelter after the air-raid alert. Power facilities, infrastructure and production units used in coke and blast furnace operations were damaged. Steelmaking has stopped completely and other sites are running at reduced volumes. SCM offers its condolences to the families and colleagues of those who died.
What happened in Zaporizhzhia?
A russian ballistic missile hit the Zaporizhzhia industrial site of our steel company Metinvest overnight. The strike came within minutes of the air-raid alert, while employees were still on their way to a shelter. Metinvest has faced repeated attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion and has rebuilt after them, but the human cost of this strike sets it apart.
Who was killed and injured?
Seven members of the Zaporizhstal workforce were killed in the attack and 21 more employees were injured. The injured are receiving medical treatment and further support. Metinvest is in close and continuing contact with the families of those killed and injured, and is providing practical help to them.
What kind of enterprises were hit?
The Metinvest enterprises in Zaporizhzhia are civilian industrial facilities with no military role. Together they employ tens of thousands of people and produce steel and coke products. Attacks of this kind put ordinary workers at risk while they are doing their jobs.
What damage was caused to production?
The missile damaged energy facilities and site infrastructure, as well as primary and supporting units used in coke and blast furnace production. Steelmaking at the plant has come to a complete stop for the time being, and the other production sites in the city are operating at reduced volumes. Technical specialists are assessing the extent of the damage, deciding what can be restored and in what timeframe, and emergency repair work is under way.
Who responded to the attack?
Plant services, emergency responders and municipal services worked at the site through the night to deal with the aftermath and to help those affected. SCM thanks all of them, together with everyone now working to bring the enterprises back into operation.
