Our steel company Metinvest has curated some of the projects across Ukraine that were built with its steel. The list is far from complete, but it is already an impressive one: buildings, bridges, trams, a water main, a naval corvette and the shelter over the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Much of this steel was made in Mariupol, Donetsk region, at the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works and the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, both destroyed by russia during the full-scale invasion. Their product is still in service, and the work has continued since 2022 in Chernihiv, Mykolaiv region and Kyiv.
What has Metinvest steel been used for in modern architecture?
Metinvest steel supports several of the best-known modern structures in Kyiv. The glass pedestrian bridge in the centre of the city was built from 700 tonnes of Azovstal plate. It is 220 metres long, stands 40 metres above the ground and has viewing platforms where the deck widens from 6 to 14 metres. The wave bridge, 164 metres long and 4 metres wide, opened in May 2024 and used 300 tonnes of complex steel structures made from the last metal produced by Azovstal before the full-scale invasion.
Metinvest also supplied hot-rolled plate for 7,500 tonnes of steel structures used to rebuild the Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex in Kyiv, the largest stadium in Ukraine with 70,050 seats. The company delivered structures made from Ilyich Steel heavy plate for the Cosmopolite shopping centre, for Lavina Mall and for the reconstruction of TsUM, the SCM owned central department store on Khreshchatyk, which reopened in November 2016.
Which transport projects use Metinvest steel?
Metinvest steel is used in road, rail and tram infrastructure. For the Darnytskyi rail and road bridge in Kyiv, which is 1,066 metres long and carries two rail tracks, six road lanes and two footpaths, Metinvest supplied 6,000 tonnes of plate. In 2018, Metinvest delivered 520 tonnes of alloy steel for the new bridge over Sukhyi Lyman on the route between Odesa and Chornomorsk, replacing a pontoon crossing built 50 years earlier.
In Kyiv, eight new trams built by Tatra-Yug entered service in spring 2023. They were made with cold-rolled and hot-rolled plate supplied to the manufacturer by the Mariupol steelmakers before the war.
How is Metinvest steel used in safety projects?
Metinvest steel is used in naval shipbuilding and in nuclear safety. The corvette Hetman Ivan Mazepa, the first Ada-class ship of the Ukrainian Navy, was built from 1,000 tonnes of hot-rolled plate from Ilyich Steel and Azovstal. The ship is almost 100 metres long and went to sea for the first time in October 2022. Sea trials began in May 2024.
For the New Safe Confinement over the fourth reactor of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Metinvest supplied about 2,000 tonnes of Azovstal plate. The impact strength of the plate was two to three times higher than standard requirements. The structure, 165 metres long, 260 metres wide and 110 metres high, was moved into place on 29 November 2016 and will contain radiation for the next 100 years.
What has continued since the full-scale invasion in 2022?
Reconstruction work has continued throughout the war. The bridge in Chernihiv, destroyed by russian forces at the start of the full-scale invasion, was rebuilt with 3,200 tonnes of steel supplied by Metinvest, including metal from Azovstal. The first stage opened to traffic in May 2024. The 628-metre crossing has cycle and pedestrian lanes and is designed to serve at least 100 years. In October 2023 the bridge entered the Book of Records of Ukraine for the longest monolithic span in the country, at more than 122 metres.
In March 2025, construction began in Mykolaiv region on a 67.8-kilometre water main. The project requires about 500 tonnes of steel products from Metinvest, mainly pipes of 800 to 900 millimetres in diameter that can withstand pressure of up to 16 atmospheres. The launch was scheduled for August 2025, giving residents of Mykolaiv access to clean drinking water.
