Our steel company Metinvest cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 5.5% during 2025. Over the same period it invested $193 million in environmental protection and energy efficiency — the largest sum in four years and 18% more than in 2024. Energy efficiency measures saved 536 TJ of energy, while new projects in renewable generation and self-sufficient energy systems are already under way.
How much did Metinvest invest in the environment in 2025?
During 2025 Metinvest directed $193 million to environmental protection and energy efficiency — the largest amount in four years and 18% more than in the previous year. Spending on environmental protection rose by $30 million, while investment in energy efficiency measures increased by $13 million. Around a quarter of the total was capital investment, with much of the remainder spent on works that brought equipment into line with environmental standards, improved waste management and reduced the impact of production on the surrounding environment. One example is a set of measures at the Northern mining and processing plant to thicken pulp and so reduce the volume sent to the tailings storage facility.
What results did the energy measures deliver?
Metinvest saved 536 TJ of energy through efficiency measures over the year. At the Northern and Central mining and processing plants, part of the natural gas used to produce iron ore pellets was replaced with biofuel made from crushed sunflower husks. As a result, the energy intensity of pellet production at the Northern plant fell to 0.423 GJ per tonne, compared with 0.46 GJ in 2024. Overall energy consumption across Metinvest declined by 9%. Taken together, these steps contributed to the 5.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions achieved in a single year.
What are the next steps in Metinvest's energy strategy?
The company is preparing to install gas piston generating units with a capacity of 120 MW and 37 MW of solar panels. These are expected to supply around 20% of the energy that its production requires. Metinvest is also developing self-sufficient energy systems, known as energy islands, at its main assets in the cities of Kryvyi Rih and Kamianske. These systems are designed to give key sites a reliable supply of energy, which is especially important in the conditions of war.
How is this work supported?
Metinvest continues to meet its environmental obligations alongside these investments. In the first quarter of 2026 alone it paid UAH 190 million ($4.2 million) in environmental tax. The company has also signed a €20 million agreement with the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank, with the funds set to support the construction of Metinvest's first solar power plants.
