The transformation of Ukraine's energy sector continues despite the challenges of war. In a ceremony in the Kyiv region, DTEK Grids, together with the Ambassador of France to Ukraine and representatives from GE Vernova, laid a time capsule to mark the construction of the first digital substation in the country. This facility signifies a shift toward a new era of modern, resilient electricity networks capable of meeting European standards.
A Technological Leap for Resilience
The new energy facility is scheduled for commissioning in 2026. Once operational, it will function as a new power hub for a district in the Kyiv region that has suffered significantly during the conflict. The substation will ensure a stable supply of electricity for more than 65,000 households and enterprises.
Technologically, this project differs fundamentally from legacy infrastructure. GE Vernova is providing digital power equipment and technology that allows for remote control and real-time network diagnostics. This capability is crucial for reducing downtime and improving the speed of repairs, a vital attribute given the current security context.
Strategic International Cooperation
The realization of this project was made possible through a grant from the French government amounting to €11 million, combined with a €4 million investment from DTEK Grids.
This partnership illustrates the core strategy defined by our shareholder, Rinat Akhmetov. His approach dictates that the modernization of Ukraine's critical infrastructure requires a cohesive effort between Ukrainian private business, state authorities, and international allies. By importing and implementing advanced global technologies, we are not only strengthening Ukraine's resistance capabilities during wartime but also ensuring the country’s sustainable development for the future.
Comments from the Partners
During the event, Gaël Veyssière, the Ambassador of France to Ukraine, highlighted the broader significance of the project. He stated that the construction of this object is a direct contribution to Ukraine's transition to the highest European standards. He further emphasized that France is convinced Ukraine's future lies within the European Union, where it will contribute to shared strategic autonomy through energy independence.
Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration, noted that the new substation will provide the additional capacity needed for both new residential complexes and industrial facilities, thereby stimulating the local economy and accelerating the region's return to normal life.
Alina Bondarenko, CEO of DTEK Grids, described the facility as a foundation for post-war recovery and energy security for Europe. She remarked that digital substations change the approach to network management, significantly increasing stability.
Project Status
As of December 2025, key preparatory works have been completed. The foundation of the substation has been laid, and construction of the cable floor is currently underway. This digital substation is part of the broader "Grids of the Future" project being implemented by DTEK to modernize distribution networks across Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa regions.
