The total length of Ukrtelecom’s optical network is enough to wrap around the Earth twice.
Over the recent years, Ukrtelecom has been actively expanding its optical infrastructure, investing in development of FTTH/P network based on GPON technology. It is the best architecture and technology for stable delivery of high-quality telecommunication services, including internet access that does not rely on the customer’s power supply. In 2022-2023, throughout the full-scale war, the operator has laid down nearly 11,000 kilometres of optical fibre, thereby extending state-of-the-art connectivity to hundreds of medical and educational institutions, as well as hundreds of thousands more households nationwide. Ukrtelecom keeps expanding its optical infrastructure by upgrading to modern telecommunications equipment, laying new fibre-optic communication lines, and replacing old copper networks with fibre optic cables, including the networks the company restores in the liberated areas.
To date, Ukrtelecom’s optical network spans across more than 80,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cables, enough to wrap around the Earth twice (the Earth‘s equator is 40,075,696 metres long), and this figure is going to increase.
“In 2023, Ukrtelecom invested around UAH 500 million in network development and IT infrastructure modernisation. This year, we’re planning to ramp up investment by 70% to over UAH 800 million. This will help us build another 8,000 kilometres of optical communication lines,”
said Yuriy Kurmaz, CEO of Ukrtelecom, outlining the company’s plans.
This means more residents of Ukrainian cities, towns and villages will have access to modern and reliable telecommunication services. Currently, Ukrtelecom’s fibre-optic network provides internet speeds of up to 1Gbps, enabling the full potential of digital services in both public and private sectors, including IP-based services like HD and 4K quality interactive TV, video conferencing, and internet telephony.
Ukrtelecom focuses on upgrading and expanding its optical infrastructure to meet the retail and business needs, providing stable communication for government agencies and special customers such as Ukraine’s security and defence forces.
As part of Rinat Akhmetov’s Steel Front military initiative Ukrtelecom has allocated more than UAH 210 million for defence purposes.
Ukrtelecom remains a leading tax contributor among fixed communication operators and providers, having paid over UAH 1.35 billion in taxes and duties to the national and local budgets last year.
