We at SCM note with deep appreciation that Maxim Timchenko, the CEO of our energy company DTEK, has been named to the TIME 100 Climate list for "driving real climate action."
This international recognition is significant. It highlights a truth that Ukraine experiences daily: the effort for climate action and the fight for national survival are now inter-dependent.
As US Ambassador Julie Davis accurately observed,
“We all know that there are so many front lines in this war and one of them runs directly through Ukraine’s power plants, substations, and energy infrastructure.”
It is on this front line that DTEK is implementing a strategy of resilience. The TIME recognition validates the move towards decentralised, green energy, which is harder to destroy and quicker to rebuild.
We are grateful that our international partners see the value of this approach. EU Ambassador Katarina Maternova recently confirmed the importance of this path, highlighting DTEK’s “significant progress” in creating a decentralised system of renewables and battery storage. It is this work that US Ambassador Davis also described, noting DTEK “at the forefront of that resilience.”
This path is a direct reflection of the core strategy of our shareholder, Rinat Akhmetov: to invest in tangible, cutting-edge solutions, even in the most difficult of times. His commitment is clear, saying “even under fire, we invest in Ukraine’s recovery and growth”.
This acknowledgement from TIME is not a conclusion. It is an affirmation that even in the face of conflict, Ukraine is building the energy system of tomorrow—one that is secure, sustainable, and resilient.
