Since the start of the full-scale invasion, DTEK Energy’s team has rebuilt its thermal power plants 49 times, bringing them back online after enemy attacks. Nearly half of these incidents occurred last year alone.
Following the attacks, the plants were often forced to shut down or “zero out,” meaning they stopped producing or supplying electricity to the grid. Before the invasion, “zeroing out” was a rare and extraordinary event, typically happening only a few times a year due to accidents. Now, however, it has almost turned into routine.
“Last year, our thermal power plants endured ten massive attacks. Despite the challenges, our energy workers have been, and continue to be, relentless in their efforts to restore the damaged facilities. Nearly 4,000 of our engineers and repair crews were directly involved in responding to the aftermath of these attacks and handling the recovery,”
said Oleksandr Fomenko, CEO of DTEK Energy.

In 2024, Russia launched 13 major attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, severely damaging DTEK Energy’s thermal power plants. By summer 2024, 90% of the company’s thermal generation capacities had been either damaged or destroyed. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the company’s plants have been targeted more than 200 times. These attacks have injured 56 power plant workers and claimed the lives of four.
